Everything You Need to Know about Street Parking in LA
Street parking in LA can be daunting, especially if new to LA or visiting. With a sprawling urban landscape and high population density, finding a convenient and legal parking spot can be a challenge. I’m here to help.
Parking Regulations and Signs
The primary skill needed is easy: Look and follow signs posted near parking areas. These instructions are clear and not subject to interpretation. Ignore them at your own risk!
Parking Meters
Parking meters are widespread throughout LA, particularly in high-traffic areas. Los Angeles uses modern “smart” parking meters that accept coins, credit/debit cards, and mobile payment apps such as ParkMobile and Passport. Some areas have multi-space meters--enter your space number and pay at a central machine. Parking rates and time limits vary from $1.00 to $6.00 per hour depending on traffic or demand. Meters are active from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. Sundays or major holidays (unless otherwise indicated) and after 8 pm are free.
Permit Parking
Certain residential areas have permit and overnight parking which are issued by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) to manage spaces for residents. Residents can apply for permits online or at a local LADOT office. Permits must be displayed clearly on the vehicle to avoid fines. These permits are absolutely required to park in designated permit zones.
Street Cleaning
Street cleaning is a common reason for parking restrictions in Los Angeles. Signs indicating street cleaning times are posted. Move your vehicle during these periods to avoid fines and towing.
Special Considerations
Parking regulations can change. Pay attention to new or temporary signage or check the city parking website:

Another good resource for parking information is www.SpotAngeles.com, the complete guide to LA street parking rules.
Reminder - Your car must be parked completely within the painted hash marks of your parking space. You can be ticketed if your bumper is even 1” outside the box or if your car is more than 18” from the curb.
The Meaning of Curb Colors
White – Stop only to pick up or drop off passengers
Green - Park for limited time posted on signs or painted on curb
Yellow – Load and unload passengers and freight only
Red – No stopping, standing, or parking
Blue - Parking vehicle displays a disabled parking placard
REMEMBER: You cannot park in a parking space having an electric car charger unless you are charging your electric car!
Parking Violation Fees
Fine are between $68 and $100 for your first parking ticket and fees go up for repeat offenders. Pay parking violation fee by the deadline or incur additional penalties. If your car is towed, count on an additional towing fee of at least $275.00 plus $45 per day storage.
With an increased emphasis on enforcement of parking violations and more parking enforcement officers hired, expect to get busted if you ignore parking regulations!
