Luminex 3.0 Coming to South Park October 5

One of our favorite street art exhibits is returning to South Park the evening of Saturday, October 5 from 7:00 to 11:30pm.   Noted as a “Pop-up Natural Wonder,” Luminex has presented its unique brand of visual video art using several blank walls of buildings in South Park as canvas twice in the last three years to the delight of residents and visitors of downtown Los Angeles.

This world class digital art exercise is accessible and free to the public and is an exclusive to the South Park neighborhood where it is the only place in the world that it can be seen.

The stated goal of Luminex is “to skew the perception of our world and our position within it.”  Having personally experienced Luminex 1.0 and 2.0, I can attest the event is a truly exciting sensory experience!  The show received the Time Out’s Best of the City 2021 award and is an event you will not want to miss.

Ten internationally acclaimed and emerging Los Angeles based artists are contributing to the event.

Luminex 3.0 is the result of a Joint Venture between the South Park Business Improvement District and the LACMA Art and Technology Lab.  Sponsors include the South Park BID, ARUP, Kevin DeLeon District 14, Show Imagery, The Proper DTLA, the Walmart Foundation, Level 8, ProLab Digital, The Eden, and 3M.  The presentation is managed by NxtArt Foundation, Now Art, Production Partners, and Panasonic Connect and is curated by Carmen Zella.

Nolan Marshall, Executive Director of South Park BID, said they are “proud to partner with NOW Art to host Luminex 3.0, an event that brings together neighbors and visitors to celebrate the possibilities of spectacular art in the public realm. In addition to our partnership, which involves staff and organizational commitment, Luminex is also South Park BID’s largest sponsorship grant of the year.”

But it was not without challenges. Saturdays in South Park are typically busy; Luminex 3.0 will take place the same day as LA Comic Con at the Convention Center, and Fieston – a community celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month at LA Live.  Luminex relies heavily on parking lots for staging the exhibits and securing agreements is always challenging even without two additional events in the neighborhood.

Why South Park? Nolan said that “South Park is a neighborhood that is perfectly built to host intimate moments and grand extravaganzas, between quiet and exuberant, between LA Live and Broadway, the Mayan and Crypto Arena.”

Nolan said they want people who are used to speeding through South Park on four wheels to walk the neighborhood and to see in the exhibits the possibilities that exist. Luminex is a chance for potential investors to see a truly vibrant and dense public realm.

Luminex is a heavy lift for all involved.  Hopefully Luminex continues to grow, even as parking lots are replaced with new towers and developments. If the corporate, philanthropic, and political communities add their support, this is a game-changing event for all of downtown Los Angeles according to Nolan.

This will be a world class experience unlike anything you’ve ever attended! See you there.
