Who’s Shaking in South Park?Lagree213 Fitness

One of DTLA’s most effective fitness studios opened their new flagship in June. Here’s what to expect when you book your first class at Lagree213.

First, it’s not Pilates. The Lagree method is a high-intensity, low impact workout that combines balance and flexibility, strength training, and isokinetic tempo. Developed by Sebastien Lagree, the method utilizes the megaformer, a device designed to challenge and sculpt the body while minimizing stress on your joints. This approach emphasizes muscle endurance, strength, and body conditioning and has gained international praise for its effectiveness.

I took a Sunday morning group class instructed by co-owner Lisa. The main thing that separates the South Park location from the others is that it’s outfitted with the newest megaformer, the Evo 2. Only 3 gyms worldwide are using them at the moment. And they’re fancy. The spring loads are controlled via remote by the instructor, saving time and allowing the workout to flow more smoothly at a higher level of intensity. Lights run down the side of the carriages, aiding the user in following the suggested 4-second pace. The experience felt elevated as soon as I stepped into the room.

The 45-minute workout itself was well rounded as we targeted a broad amount of muscle groups throughout the body. We were guided through various sets, generally moving along the carriage at a 4-second pace, as Lisa adjusted the springs to get the most out of every movement. The workout is famously known for the shake you get when you maintain control in your muscles as they start to reach a weakening point, it’s when they’re working the hardest. The next day I was sore in parts of my body I’ve never been sore before, a good indicator that areas were targeted that my body wasn’t used to. Success!

Owners Lisa and Ben are passionate and true to the method. Serving the Historic Core and Arts District for several years now, their first two locations couldn’t keep up with the demand. Enter their newest South Park location at 12th and Hope, with 18 megaformers and a private classroom, it’s the biggest studio of the 3.

Overall, I loved my first visit to the new Lagree studio. Ben and Lisa were a joy to chat with as I could feel the enthusiasm and commitment to what they do. And with 3 locations downtown, their success speaks for itself.
