Summer Arrived in South Park at The Mayan TheaterSPNA Hosted a Neighborhood Night to Remember
The glamour of the space, the experience of the tours, the sounds of live music and DJ songs, the tastes of great food and excellent drinks, and the fun of hanging out with friends and neighbors is how many in South Park celebrated the Summer Solstice.
The South Park Neighborhood Association (SPNA) held its Summer Solstice event at The Mayan on June 20th. Thank you to the Mayan for presenting itself in its full glamour, including warm lighting, high top tables, and 3D multimedia screens with shots of South Park and previous SPNA events.
The evening was highlighted by fantastic tours given by The L.A. Historical Society every 30 minutes all evening with all tours at maximum capacity. Tour goers relived the history of the Mayan which began in 1927 with musical comedy and then was rented out to produce “The Greatest Negro All Star Musical to Hit the Coast” which went on to run in NYC. For 18 years it was used by a pornographic filmmaker. More recently it was featured in an episode of the Glow. It is designated a Historical Cultural Monument, and the tour told that history beautifully.
Add to that, the musical talents, featuring musician, Raine Stern and DJ Banga. South Park attendees were treated to pictures taken in front of the step and repeat (which are included in this newsletter) and within other illuminated corners of the historical theatre. Beef sliders, chicken, pork, and vegetable sliders were provided by the art room. What a wonderful, fun night!
In addition to the generous hospitality of the Mayan, SPNA was especially appreciative to the event sponsors: Lagree213, Throw Clay, Sativa Tequila, Kennedy Wilson, MedBeautyLA, and Michael Robleto of Compass.
SPNA appreciated the hard-working volunteers – Enid Nilsson, Steven Kenny, Laura Wang, Grace Litam, Rachael Shrout, Priscilla Santoli, Alex Enriquez, Larry Belliston, and Tom Shrout plus the Summer Solstice committee.
The Mayan is a wonderful South Park neighbor, and the venue is a historical treasure. About 130 people shared this memorable evening together. Overall, South Park residents in attendance indicated that it exceeded their expectations – many experiencing The Mayan for the first time.
We look forward to seeing you at upcoming SPNA neighborhood events – such as our 3rd Annual Neighborhood Night Out on July 31 (look for the save the date in this newsletter)!
