The South Park Neighborhood Association Envisions the Future of South Park

SPNA is proposing the closure of three blocks of South Grand Ave. from Olympic Blvd to Pico Blvd in order to create a public park for all to enjoy!

THE PRESENT AND FUTURE OF SOUTH GRAND AVENUE :

South Grand Avenue now:

 1.      A dehumanized carrier of heavy traffic with street edge short term parking

2.     A No Man’s Land barrier cutting the South Park neighborhood into east and west halves

3.      Serves only as a conduit for disinterested drivers in 3,000 pound weapons through the South Park neighborhood spewing noise and carbon dioxide for residents to breath.

4.     Always dangerous and potentially deadly to residents of South Park who cross it or ride their bikes near or on it.

5.     A stage for launching 400 hp machinery on speed contests as well as other various adolescent behavior through the heart of our community.

As a SuperBlock, South Grand Avenue could be:

1.     A lush, green park for walking, talking, play, planning, dreaming, interaction

2.     A cool, quiet respite from the heat and chaos of the city -A verdant spot in the center of the concrete jungle

3.     The Community Center of the South Park neighborhood

4.     A vibrant commercial corridor of restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues

5.     The catalyst for more SuperBlocks in LA leading to a complete transformation of the city. Los Angeles could become a people-centric city rather than a car-centric city.

6.     A valuable asset that would make South Park one of the most desirable places to live in Los Angeles.

7.     The SuperBlock could be a place:

·      to ride your bike, skateboard, or just BE without worrying about personal injury

·      for a Farmers Market

·      to meet your neighbor, walk your dog

·      for a Performing Arts stage

·      for a playground and a picnic

·      for a basketball court, a putting green

·      to play chess and have a beer

·      to have your morning cup of coffee

·      for birds and squirls

·      for a dog park

·      to read a book or eat an ice cream cone

·      for a community garden

What do you think the South Park SuperBlock could be to you?

Think about it.
